Dramatic increase in the number of asylum-seekers in January
There was a 47 per cent increase of asylum-applicants in January 2009 compared to January 2008. The majority of the asylum-seekers came from Afghanistan, 224 persons. The second largest group were Iraqis, 190 persons. This is the first time since December 2007 that Iraqis are not the largest group of asylum-seekers. This could be a result of the Torshov-project, which partly involves fast-track decisions for Iraqis. The number of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum was 171 persons, of which two thirds came from Afghanistan.
